ty.net/sessionPop.cfm?confid=124&proposalid=9940\n
The Defense Technical
Information Center (DTIC®), as one of the Department of Defense (DoD) A
gency’s missions, is to provide essential, technical research, develo
pment, testing, and evaluation (RDT&E) information rapidly, accurately,
and reliably to support our DoD customers' needs. DTIC's collectio
ns contain over 4.5 million documents, including technical reports, researc
h in progress, international agreements, and Independent Research and Devel
opment (IR&D) summaries. DTIC also publishes searchable Congressional b
udget data shortly after its release from Congress. DTIC acquires approxima
tely 25,000 new research documents each year, expected to triple in number
in the next few years. A key challenge for DTIC is to make this data useful
to end users. In response, DTIC has invested in an enterprise metadata str
ategy to provide efficient and consistent information extraction methods ac
ross its collections and develop downstream applications that will leverage
this metadata in order to automate much of the manual effort it takes rese
archers to search through data in order to find answers.
\n
\nWha
t attendees will learn:
\n\n
How DTIC applied information extraction technologies across heterogeneous d
ata collections\n
What are best practices and lessons learned for creating and maintaining a
large enterprise vocabulary\n
How to develop metadata driven applications that maximize an enterprise&rsq
uo;s data.\n
What benefits and return on investment have DTIC seen from its investment i
n metadata applications. \n\n
