Data Model is a difficult proposition if the structural needs of data mode
lers and architects are not balanced with the demands of business users con
tinuously adapting to changing priorities and external drivers. This s
ession will describe how, based on the speaker’s experiences launchin
g multiple enterprise data initiatives - including architecture and governa
nce side-by-side with analytics and business intelligence - to align the so
metimes competing drivers of the architects and builders of the “data
house + foundation” with those of the business analysts that need to
start living inside the “data house” as soon as possible (ofte
n far in advance of the planned completion date of construction).
\n\n
\n

The idea that the construction of the “data house” will ever
be completely finished is a myth.
\n	\n	\n

The least efficient organizational structure for delivering the “d
ata house” splits the work units across different teams with competin
g priorities and no central authority.
\n	\n	\n

The most efficient organizational approach for delivering the “dat
a house” evangelizes a culture of virtual alignment, regardless of or
g structure.
\n	\n	\n

Rather than architecting the entire blueprints of the “data house,
” iteratively mature the basic modules of an enterprise data pro
gram - including Data Staging, Data Modeling, Data Integration, Business Ac
cess, Business Governance, and Business Self-Service for Reporting and Anal
ytics - based on business value and priority.
\n
\n\nDirectly aligning your program to measurable business value maintains e
ngagement and support for ongoing investment, while minimizing the fatigue
that can build over the span of long deployments.
