ty.net/sessionPop.cfm?confid=124&proposalid=10028\n
Getting off your lega
cy systems is hard. One of the reasons is that the arbitrary function,
process, and data boundaries of legacy systems makes it hard to improve th
em incrementally. It’s even hard to think of how you would impro
ve them.
\n
In this presentation, we will show how the data-cent
ric approach can be used as an organizing principle, and how the technology
can be used in incremental migration.
\n
If you are in a large enterp
rise, you know that you have a datascape of unfathomable complexity. I
t’s highly likely that you have over 1 million data elements under ma
nagement (if you have even one installation of SAP, you’re virtually
there already, and who stops at just one ERP system these days?)
\n
If
you’re looking at your existing data (or god forbid your data lake,
which is essentially the sum total of all your managed data plus whatever y
ou could harvest from the web) you’re looking through the wrong end o
f the telescope
\n
Once you realize that a single simple conceptual mo
del covers all the key concepts and relations in your firm you are halfway
there. When you see this as the lens through which you can see and pla
n the demise of your legacy systems, you are three-fourths of the way there
. When you grok that this model is directly implementable and can be t
ied directly to your legacy systems, you are seven-eighths of the way there
. Zeno of Elea and his famous paradox tells us you will never get there, bu
t any engineer worth his or her salt will tell you that you will rapidly ge
t close enough.
\n
After attending this talk, participants will:
\n
\n
Realize that it is possible to create an enterprise ontology that covers an
d organizes almost all the important concepts in even a large organization\
n
Appreciate the perspective such a model provides for the complex task of le
gacy replacement planning\n
Be able to articulate an approach that is hundreds of millions of dollars c
heaper than either continuing to feed the monster or embarking on a traditi
onal legacy replacement project\n\n
