ty.net/sessionPop.cfm?confid=124&proposalid=10027\n
In the spirit of Chri
stopher Alexander, the Gang of Four, and Eric Evans, we present the distill
ation of 20 years of experience modeling the meaning of data independent of
its structure, in the form of a Pattern Language.
\n
40 years ago, Ch
ristopher Alexander captured the timeless wisdom of building architecture t
hat was incorporated in and sprang from context and natural considerations.
Rather than prescribe specific designs or even methodology, the Patte
rn Language organizes and expresses the forces that impel design decisions
and explores ways to resolve the tensions of those forces. Design Patterns
showed us that this approach was suitable for Object-Oriented Design and Do
main-Driven Design and showed us how to use this approach for application d
esign.
\n
We have organized the design choices we have been encounteri
ng as we help clients navigate the treacherous journey of migrating from a
mindset centered on process and application to one centered on data and mea
ning.
\n
The tutorial will cover the need to have design decisions gro
unded in principled tradeoffs (rather than arbitrary choice which pass for
best practices in most domains). We will discuss the value that comes
from naming these patterns and making them explicit, in terms of promoting
deep design discussions.
\n
We have cataloged over 100 of these patter
ns and organized them in a precedence network (many design decisions affect
other decisions; understanding the dependency can help a great deal in eva
luating how much time should be spent resolving the competing forces).&nbsp
;We will expose attendees to all the patterns but go deep on a few dozens t
hat are most representative.
\n
After attending this tutorial, partici
pants will:
\n\n
Appreciate the value of adopting a pattern language for all their data desi
gn projects\n
Understand how this value is at a premium when embarking on firm-wide and d
ata-centric initiatives\n
Be able to describe the value that a Pattern Language brings to team-based
design\n	Have a list of Patterns that can be applied to design projects\n
Be able to apply a few key patterns in their own domains\n\n
